Glass Pressed
How to fix a broken window pane
You should always replace the broken windows as soon as possible, even if it is only cracked. In addition to being dangerous, broken glass allows moisture to penetrate parts window to create other problems more serious. In addition to this, the broken windows are not only an eyesore, but can significantly increase your cost of heating and cooling.
To begin with, the tools you need to complete this project properly include a glass cutter, pressure points, a putty knife, putty glazing, chisel, screwdriver and a hammer. Also make sure to wear goggles and gloves.
1. Remove all broken glass. Use needlenose pliers to remove small fragments. Place all broken glass in newspaper and tape shut before discarding.
2. Remove all glazing compounds. There are several ways to remove the glazing putty also known as putty from the rabbet. Try prying off the frame with a scraper or putty knife. If This method does not work, you can also try using a chisel to remove compounds from the window. Before doing so, make sure mark the compound by running a knife along a metal ruler where the sealant meets the wood. Be careful as you do as you can easily damage the wood.
3. After removing all the filler, then you must remove the old glazing points. To do this, use pliers nose pliers to remove all items. The items generally come out easily once you have removed all the putty.
4. You will then tailor for your glass replacement. Once you have removed all the glazing compound and glazing points, measure distances between the grooves on the top and bottom and also two lateral grooves. Subtract 1 / 8 inch in two steps to determine the height and width of the new window. You can order your new piece of glass at most hardware stores.
5. Apply a primer outside of the rebate. Allow several hours for the primer to dry before proceeding to the next step.
6. Install new glass. Apply a 1/4-inch bead of glazing compound perimeter of the rabbet, and press the glass in place to create a tight seal. Install glazing points to 8-inch intervals around the glass. Press the tip of the glazing point on the side of the rebate, and use a stiff putty knife to stir the point in the wood.
7. Roll the compound between the palms of your hands to make it more flexible. With your fingers, press the compound into the rabbet where the glass meets the edge of the window frame. Use a putty knife to smooth the glazing compound. From one of the corners, slide the knife along the walls, molding it clearly against the glass as you go. Remove any sealant that has been cut.
This project is a simple solution for most homeowners. Remember to take all safety precautions that I have said because broken glass can cause serious injury. Take your time and be patient and take your time and you'll be happy with the results. Good luck!
