Stick Handle
Does anybody know of any good stick handling drills?
I’m an adult that just joined an ice hockey league. It’s a league for people with little or no experience, but most of the player’s have much more experience than I do (I never had any until I started). Besides just skating around the rink with the puck, what are some other good stick handling drills I can work on individually? What about good skating drills? Shooting drills? Any drills really!
he he he, i used to get drilled over ande over again by my father and myself to improve, went from a B team to a competative team in one year.
Stickhandling: Get on your knees, put a puck infront of you and stickhandle from left to center to right and back again. it might not seem to work, but it does.
Put 2 pucks infront of you, and take another and stickhandle a figure 8 around them. As your speed and skill improves, you can add another puck and another and another.
get a bunch of pylons and set them in a line about 6 inches apart, skate over the pylons and stickhandle the puck between each pylon. this will develop fast hands and good control.
Skating drills: It is important to remember to keep facing one direction the whole time doing this drill.
Start at one of the face off cirlces in the corner, skate around it once and go to the next one, repeat, then switch sides. This improves backward skating and forward turning.
Skate down the ice, pass the face off dot then start skating backwards on the other side of the face off dot all the way to where you started. This will improve your transitional skating skills.
There are probably hundreds of skating drills out there, ive given a few that work really well for improving forward and backward skating. But there is a turning drill that is good for when you are chasing someone down. Just pull the sharpest turn you can, without falling over, then pull another one and so on. With a puck, this could also be a stickhandling drill.
Shooting/Passing: Shoot repetedly against the boards and try to get the puck to bounce back to you. The distance from the boards is optional. This teaches more powreful shots.
For accuracy, get a few pylons and place them around a point (where the pucks are gonna be) and get 5/6 pucks and shoot at the pylons. With practise you could get some string and tie them hanging in the net and try hitting those.
For passing, well, passing is just a shot to a team members stick.
Oh and when you recieve the puck from shooting it at the boards, try to kind of cradle it in your stick when you do, like you would recieve a pass. This is to absorb impact and keep the pucko n your stick. What i find works better is just absorbing it by bringing the stick back rather than catching it at an angle.
