Queen Anne
The Queen of the Midlands, England
Nottingham – Castle and Bar
Nottingham becomes bad press recently, with problems downtown gun crime and burglary. While there is no doubt that these problems exist, Nottingham remains for me a big city full of interesting places to see both old and new.
Nottingham is located in central England and is often referred to as The Queen of the Midlands. The city has always been of strategic importance.
Nottinghamshire countryside good hunting grounds of Kings and the forest provided shelter for good brigands most notably the famous Robin Hood. Although much of the forest has disappeared today, Nottinghamshire still has some the most beautiful woodlands in England with ancient oaks, the oldest of them being the Major Oak. Legend has it that Robin Hood hid in the trunk this tree to escape the very bad Sheriff of Nottingham.
The city of Nottingham has a rich and colorful history. Here are some places to wet your appetite.
Nottingham Castle
At the heart of the city is Nottingham Castle, situated on a rocky outcrop of sandstone above city. The original castle was built here by the orders of William the Conqueror in 1067.
Henry 1 later replaced the structure wood with imposing stone castle. This was to remain for hundreds of years as one of the most important castles in England.
The notorious Sheriff of Nottingham lived here when Richard the Lion Heart was on the "Third Crusade, providing the framework for the final confrontation between legend, the sheriff and Robin Hood.
The castle served as a rallying point for Charles 11 during the English Civil War. Charles erected Royal Standard near the castle to mark the beginning of the war. A stone in the center of the road at Standard Hill marks the spot.
It is a labyrinth of caves and tunnels under the castle. The most famous among them is Mortimer Hole where the usurper of the throne of Edward 111 was captured and executed.
The original castle was almost completely destroyed. What you see today is a seventeenth century mansion built on the site of origin. Since the late nineteenth century, it was a world famous museum, thousands of homes objects and art collections. With its dungeons and activities for children Nottingham Castle is well worth a visit.
Olde Trip to You Jerusalem
Carved into the sandstone rock under Nottingham Castle that is reputedly the oldest pub in the world. Founded in 1189, the inn rest and refreshments provided to the Crusaders of Richard the Lion Heart during the "Third Crusade.
