Acai Palm: a valuable component of the Brazilian way of life
The Acai palm is one of eight species palm Euterpe classified under the genus. Pronounced "ah-sigh-ee, acai grows abundantly in floodplains and swamps of Central Europe and America South where the tropical climate is favorable to this dark purple drupe.
Acai palm trees are grown for their fruit and hearts. Although has been a staple for many years in Brazil, the acai berry has become extremely popular in the United States in recent years that global demand has gone through the roof.
Similar to grapes, acai palm produces fruit in clusters, ranging from green to a dark purple when ripe. Acai fruit is round, with a large single seed enclosed in a fibrous pulp covered with a coating of oily skin.
