Victorian Christmas Decorations
Lush and lavish are the key concepts in Victorian Christmas decorations. Colors rich, luxurious fabrics and embellishments splendidly over-the-top make this style embodies the elegance of luxurious accommodation.
The Victorian (1837-1901) was known for strict rules of behavior that any regulated ettiquette to morality, but the styles, fashions and tastes of the time were far from being puritanical. In Europe and the United States a burgeoning middle class have been enjoying the economic effects of the industrial revolution and they reveled in displaying their renewed prosperity.
At a time when even everyday objects are often richly decorated, the holiday season has been an annual explosion of color, brightness, and the profusion exuberant Rococo. Here are some tips to give an air of Victorian to your holiday decor.
Use color to create mood
The Victorians loved color and used everywhere, sometimes in combinations that we find surprising today. But very bright colors (including fire-engine red and green apple that we associate with Christmas now) have rarely been seen in the decorations of the time. Colors that are typical of the period include deep jewel tones of red, blue, green and purple, with shades of gold and cream.
Suggestion: try to decorate your tree with ornaments Deep jewel tones, and replace tree lights with wide swaths of Burgundy red ribbon. Add accents with bow cream and balls of bright gold or figures.
Suggestion: If you do not like deep tones, try to go with the theme of pastel. Although not as faithful to history, clear tones of dusty pink or blue mixed with cream and ecru and emphasized with much gold may look breathtaking period. Strings of beads make a stunning accent on a holiday theme pastel.
Lots of greenery where watching
Branches of pines and other greenery have been a staple of holiday decor during the period. Carefully landscaped with fruit, flowers, candles, ornaments and woven into garlands, greenery is everywhere.
Suggestion: hang garlands of pine, where you can – festooned on the stairs, doors nearby, and draped over mirrors and fireplaces. Weave wide ribbon, silky fabric, or thick rope of gold decoration through the branches and decorate them with bows, flowers, packages figurines, ornaments, and tiny wrapped.
Hint: strictly speaking, electric Christmas lights are not really part of holiday decor period. But they are quite consistent with the spirit of decorating the time, and using a little gold colored mini lights creates recalls a warm glow by candlelight.
In case of doubt, embellish!
