Fine China Tea Cups And Saucers

What are these strange cuts that I see in charity shops, shallow, wide, two porcelain handles usually?
Grandfather the habit of drinking his tea from his saucer. If they are not so "refined" looking I would guess the cups were for something similar, allowing the liquid to cool. And by the way drinking tea, a dish is delicious. My grandfather knew what he was doing.
They are soup bowls. From medieval times, you can find soup bowls with one or two handles. The handles are there for you can "SIP-up the last bit of broth. I'll link to some pictures below.
