Wedgwood, Villeroy & Boch, or Rosenthal?
I’m planning to purchase some new casual china. I want something durable in white or off-white in a pattern that won’t be discontinued soon. I’ve looked at the Queen’s Plain in Wedgwood, Manoir and Country Heritage in V&B, and various patterns in Rosenthal. Rosenthal is so pricey that I think it’s out (although I love it).
Is stoneware easier to break than porcelain or vitreous china (I don’t exactly know what the last is)? I’m kind of clumsy, so durability is an important factor.
Which one should I choose?

Well, you have great taste. Any fine china will hold up better than stoneware. It’s sounds strong, but it’s not really. Fine China or porcelain are fired at a much higher temperature in the manufacturing process, which makes them stronger. I have Wedgwood, Grand Gourmet and have used it every day for the last 7 years….no breaks. I did drop one and it chipped, didn’t break, but chipped. Wedgwood doesn’t make Grand Gourmet any more, but I’d choose it again anyway. I’ve added on to the set through Replacements Ltd. Most reputable china companies, will continue to make a pattern available even after it’s discontinued. I love V&B Manoir, it’s a classic and been around a long time. Vitreous china is what toilet’s are made of….very strong. Stay away from anything that comes in a large set (45 pieces). They are generally not of a good quality. I’m a thrifter (thrift store shopper) and very rarely see good china in thrift stores. It just lasts so much longer. Anyway good luck.
