Art Set
question about art set..?
i just got a new set of pencils and erasers & i love art but honestly i have no idea what the difference is between them. theres HB, B, 2B, 4B, 6B, and H graphite drawing pencils & a plastic, pink & kneaded eraser. do you know what the difference is in any of these/what they do?

As an art teacher, explaining tools and supplies is one of the first things I do with my students. Think of 2B pencil as the #2 pencil you use in school. All B pencils are soft graphite therefore a darker line. H pencils (H for hard graphite) make a lighter, softer line. The higher the number the harder or softer the graphite depending on whether its an H or B pencil. From softest to hardest (think of it as a number line from left to right) 6B, 4B, 2B, B HB, and H. H’s are good for layouts and light sketching and B’s are good for finishing work or deep contrasting values. Erasers: pink eraser is good for school work, thats about all; white plastic erasers are much better and do not leave pink streaks on your paper. The kneaded eraser is wonderful for heavy graphite removal and subtle eraser work. Knead and shape the eraser to fit a tiny detail to erase or use it like silly putty to lift off the Sunday comics from the newspaper.
